Rep. Jasmine Crockett suggested that her race significantly contributed to her hiring as a public defender despite her lack of experience.

Jasmine Crockett: “When I first became a public defender, I had no criminal defense experience. I walked in, and I told my boss, Charlie, I said, ‘Listen, you should hire me.’ He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because I’m Black.’ Charlie looked at me like I was crazy.”

When I’m in trouble, I focus solely on the skills and competence of the person helping me. Their appearance is irrelevant; I want the best and most capable help available.
