ICE agents arrested city comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander in a chaotic scene outside a federal immigration court.

The video showed Lander repeatedly demanding to see a judicial warrant for a man being hauled away by immigration agents, all while he kept his hand clutched on the detainee’s shoulder.

“Our heroic ICE law enforcement officers face a 413% increase in assaults against them—it is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment,” a DHS spokesperson said. “No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences.”

Brad Lander has no special authority or right to put his hands on, demand to see a warrant, or otherwise interfere with a federal officer in the performance of their duties.

If he wants to make a public statement or even pay for the legal representation of any individual, he’s free to do so. Interfering with a lawful enforcement action? Get arrested, and you will go to jail and face the consequences.
